Federal Skilled Trades Program

    Home Federal Skilled Trades Program

    This is for people intending to become permanent residents on grounds of qualifying in a skilled trade and have at least two years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade within the five years before your application. They must meet the job requirements for that skilled trade as set out in the National Occupational Classification (NOC), except for needing a certificate of qualification, and have an offer of full-time employment for a total period of at least one year or a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority. Additionally they must meet the minimum level of CLB 5 (English) or NCLC 5 (French) for speaking and listening, and CLB 4 (English) or NCLC 4 (French) for reading and writing through a language test approved by Immigration Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and include the results at time of submitting their Express Entry profile if they are invited to apply for permanent residence. If not, they will not be eligible for Express Entry. The test results must be less than two years old when we get your application for permanent residence. Please Click Here

    Eligible Trades List

    The list is organized under these major and minor groups of the NOC:

    • Major Group 72, industrial, electrical and construction trades
    • Major Group 73, maintenance and equipment operation trades
    • Major Group 82, supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production
    • Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators
    • Minor Group 632, chefs and cooks
    • Minor Group 633, butchers and bakers

    These major NOC groups are subdivided into different occupations. (All are NOC skill type B.)

    In other to qualify, you must show that you performed the duties set out in the lead statement of the occupational description in the NOC. This includes all the essential duties and most of the main duties listed.

     Inadmissibility

    There are a number of reasons you can be found inadmissible, denied a visa or refused entry to Canada under IRPA, such as:

    • security
      human or international rights violations
      • criminality
      • organized criminality
      • health grounds
      • financial reasons
      • misrepresentation
      • non-compliance with IRPA or
      • having an inadmissible family member
