Canada is a signatory to the United Nations multilateral treaty on Refugee Convention or the Geneva Convention of 28 July 1951. A Convention refugee is someone with a well-founded fear of persecution based on Race, Religion, Political opinion, Nationality or Membership in a particular social group/class such as, women or people of a particular sexual orientation.
